Where Do We Start?

Knowing Jesus Christ is the most important thing we can be resolved about. Paul knew that the apparent foolishness of Jesus and the Cross revealed God’s power and wisdom. Jesus is our greatest source of boasting and the source of true knowledge. Resolving to know Christ is the starting point for our new year. If we don’t start here, it’s not worth starting at all.

The God Who Suffers

PROPOSITION: The idea of a “God who suffers” is humanly unthinkable, but true! If it is true:
•	It has to be the most unique act in human history!
•	It has to be the act of a sovereign God – the God who can do anything!
•	It has to be for an absolutely very good reason- such as Agape love.
•	If all of the above are true, your response to that single act determines your eternal destiny! The choice is yours!

Start Here [Ministry Kick-Off Weekend]

In Ephesians 4, Paul parallels the church’s growth in Christ-likeness to a human’s growth from infancy toward maturity. We are to “become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). As we begin a ‘new year’ this Fall at Eastbrook, we want to encourage everyone to connect with God and others, grow to be like Christ, and serve both inside and outside of the church.

Faithfulness

I died to the Law through the Law, so that I could live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the life that I now live in my body, I live by faith, indeed by the faithfulness of God’s Son, who loved me and gave himself for me. I don’t ignore the grace of God, because if we become righteous through the Law, then Christ died for no purpose. Galatians 2:19-21 CEB

Ephesus: Extinguishing Evil

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.	Rev 12:7-9

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
Corinth: Explosion of Life

Remember the Resurrection (15:1-11) “I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you…” (15:1)

Hold onto the Resurrection (15:12-19) “How can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?” (15:12)

Hope in the Resurrection (15:20-28) “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (15:20)

Understand the Resurrection (15:35-49) “The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable.” (15:42)

Live in Light of the Resurrection (15:29-34, 58) “Therefore…always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord.” (15:58)

Celebrate the Resurrection (15:50-57) “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (15:57)

1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. … Ephesians 4:1-6

Wise with Time

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. … Ephesians 5:15-21

The Lost

“Why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” … Luke 6:46-48 [Only God can tell us how God feels about us]

THE PROBLEM Jesus was getting sidetracked by sinners. He was associating with them and they were crowding his schedule. The „serious people‟ of God saw this and tried to give him some „serious advice.‟ “How can you have table fellowship and all it implies with these sinful, marginal people?”

The Powerless

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
